GM Shifts Health Administration to Aetna in Major Blow to Blue Cross Michigan

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is facing a significant setback after General Motors announced it will strip the insurer of its role administering health benefits for salaried employees. Starting January 1, GM will transition approximately 92,000 members over to Aetna, bringing its entire U.S. salaried workforce under a single administrator. While GM remains self-insured and covers its own medical bills, the loss of such a massive corporate account marks a high profile departure for the regional insurance giant.

In an internal memo that described the development as bad news, BCBSM President and CEO Tricia Keith urged her staff to view the loss as rocket fuel for necessary organizational change. She acknowledged that the shift underscores how competitive the health insurance market has become and called for an acceleration of efforts to modernize technology, refine company culture, and lower costs for remaining members. Despite the blow, BCBSM maintains it holds a strong market position with roughly 4.5 million customers statewide.

The timing of the announcement could not be worse for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, arriving just one day before Attorney General Dana Nessel filed an antitrust lawsuit alleging the company operates an illegal monopoly within the state. As the firm navigates legal challenges and lost revenue, some stability remains; spokespeople confirmed that BCBSM will continue providing coverage for GM’s unionized workforce of about 100,000 employees and their families.

From the perspective of those affected at General Motors, officials say the switch is primarily about simplification rather than disruption. Company spokesperson Kevin Kelly noted that moving all domestic salaried workers to Aetna streamlines administration across different states without significantly impacting local care or provider networks in Michigan. For now, thousands of employees are adjusting to the notification while BCBSM attempts to pivot its strategy toward long term sustainability.
